One of the main nations of Novrand. The most technologically advanced nation, and the most secular nation.
History
In the 100 years following the Banishing War (~900 years ago), without a strong unifying force to keep them together, Ancient Chevell splits into 3 city-states: Avilogne, Fairmond and Staalmarkt.
For the next 500 years, the three new nations plot against each other and irregularly wage war for supremacy. This warfare only amounts to spending resources for all parties involved, draining economic growth and hamstringing innovation.
The outlook of the warring city states changes drastically when both gunpowder and mogushen are invented in the far eastern nation of Xinguang with only a year between them. In Chevell, these major discoveries spook the leaders of Avilogne, Fairmond and Staalmarkt, who realize they will all be eventually at the mercy of Xinguang unless something is done. The nations reunite against their (perceived) common enemy and form the Chevell Alliance (~400 years ago).
The alliance turns out to be a success, bringing stability and economic prosperity to all three parties. The alliance begins aggressively funding scientific research, leading to the discovery of e.g. steampower and printing press. Chevell eventually overtakes Xinguang in technological progress and to this day, it’s the most technologically advanced nation in the world. With the rapid success of the scientific method gradually changing the worldview of most Chevellians, it is also the least religious nation in the world and the only nation with no official state religion.
